In various parts of the game, different characters will refer to the "Cromags" and the Cromag War.
From the very beginning of the game it is revealed that Zero was a New Mecca soldier and that he is haunted by nightmares related to the war.
At one point in the game, a disabled veteran living in New Mecca accuses Zero of being a Cromag. It has been confirmed that Cromags are a race of people[1], who likely look similar to the regular citizens of New Mecca.
In Zero's flashback to the war, he is shown killing a scientist and destroying equipment. It is likely that the scientist and the child in the flashback were Cromags.
